Discernment

Counseling

A forest scene with a dirt trail splitting into two paths, surrounded by dense green trees and foliage.

When one partner is leaning toward ending the relationship and the other hopes to save it, traditional couples therapy often isn't the right place to start. Discernment counseling is designed specifically for couples who are uncertain about the future of their relationship and need clarity before deciding what comes next.

Rather than working to solve relationship problems immediately, discernment counseling helps each partner better understand how the relationship reached this point, identify the patterns that have contributed to the current crisis, and thoughtfully consider their options. Together, we'll explore three possible paths: continuing the relationship as it is, pursuing separation or divorce, or making a mutual commitment to couples therapy with the intention of rebuilding the relationship.

Discernment counseling is a short-term process that honors both partners' perspectives without pressure or judgment. My role is not to convince either person to stay or leave, but to provide a structured, balanced space where each of you can gain insight, feel heard, and make a thoughtful, informed decision.

By the end of the process, you'll have greater clarity about your relationship, a deeper understanding of your own contributions to the current challenges, and confidence in whatever path you choose together.

Discernment counseling might

be right for you if...

  • One partner is "leaning out" while the other wants to preserve the relationship.

  • You're considering separation or divorce but aren't completely certain.

  • You've tried couples therapy before without clarity.

  • You want to make a thoughtful decision rather than one driven by emotion or crisis.
